Aether Aerospace
Aether Aerospace is the Republic's largest airframe company and its closest equivalent to a national aerospace champion. It is a listed commercial company, but a government national-security share restricts changes of control and disposal of sensitive design authorities. Dated production programmes and facilities are controlled by Aviation Manufacturing and Systems; completed aircraft are recorded in Aircraft of the Republic.
Origins
Aether traces its formal foundation to the Aether Motor Works established at Blue Skies in 1896. Engine shops and experimental airship work expanded into bomber, transport and civil-aircraft production before the Imperial War. Wartime airframe shops, proving facilities and heavy-transport bureaux were consolidated into the modern company after 1948 without breaking that corporate lineage.
The engine division was separated into AeroFlux Dynamics in 1956. Aether has since been an airframe and systems-integration house rather than a vertically integrated engine manufacturer. Its growth nevertheless depended on public procurement, state technical colleges, municipal airfields and a distributed supplier base.
Industrial footprint
Headquarters, final assembly, secure systems engineering and the main flight-test organisation remain in Blue Skies. Brelminster produces major structures and hosts heavy structural test rigs. Large sections move to final assembly in controlled jigs by rail or dedicated freighter.
Aether controls overall aircraft configuration and final acceptance but buys most equipment. AeroFlux or the AeroFlux-led Orion venture supplies engines according to type. Valence controls defined aerodynamic and flight-control work on the F-52. SecureWing, OmniTech, SkyNet, Stratolink and QuantumNav supply avionics under controlled interfaces, while MetalMind, SynthoPolymers and AeroHull support structures and finishes.
The group directly employs about 34,000 people in design, assembly, testing and product support. Several times that number work on Aether programmes at suppliers, but those workers are not Aether employees and many also serve other customers. Training pipelines include the Air Service Academy at Blue Skies, state technical colleges in Westrake and Brelworth, and the company's production apprenticeships.
Core business lines
Strategic and combat aircraft
Aether is prime contractor for the C-44 Stratos Titan heavy transport, B-54 Nightfall strike aircraft and naval NF-52 Falcon. It shares the F-52 Kestrel with Valence. Each programme has its own configuration authority; common materials or software tools do not make a change automatically acceptable across all four aircraft.
Civil aircraft
Aether is design authority for the AA-118 Starling airliner and shares the ST-220 Titanliner programme with the Stratos Titan organisation. Civil volume sustains large-structure tooling, engine interfaces, simulators and worldwide field support that would be uneconomic for the military fleet alone. Cargo conversion and government aircraft are secondary but profitable activities.
Advanced programmes
The advanced-programmes organisation studies low-observable structures, long-endurance systems, high-altitude platforms and future propulsion installation. Prototype work is separately accounted from production contracts. A successful demonstrator does not become a production aircraft until requirements, support cost and industrial capacity have been funded.
Production and programme control
Civil and military configuration boards control approved suppliers, test evidence and serial effectivity. Final-assembly floor space is rarely the main constraint. Engines, radar arrays, large forgings, landing gear, ejection seats and experienced inspectors have longer lead times than ordinary structures. A second shift can clear a temporary backlog, but a sustained increase requires supplier tooling and training.
Product support supplies structural inspections, approved repairs, software baselines, simulators and field teams for decades after delivery. During a readiness crisis, repair, spares and return of stored aircraft take priority over a headline increase in new-build rate. Export programmes are accepted only when the company and government can support them without displacing domestic fleet needs.
Civic and political position
Aether sponsors air shows, engineering scholarships, veterans' employment and local institutions around Blue Skies. Retired fitters and inspectors are prominent in schools and civic associations. Critics argue that the company has excessive influence over procurement and regional infrastructure; supporters answer that government choices created long-lived design obligations that cannot be moved between contractors cheaply. Both views reflect Aether's unusual economic weight in Westrake.
