Republic Air Force

The Republic Air Force is the Republic's land-based air arm. It is organised around role specialisation, disciplined crew training and a deliberately broad industrial base. Its combat aircraft are not treated as interchangeable machines. Fighter, strike, support, reconnaissance and training fleets are procured for defined tasks, and even front-line fighters retain a two-person cockpit: a pilot to fight the aircraft and a weapons systems officer to manage sensors, weapons, datalinks and the wider air battle. Complete type, production-block, layout, crew, sensory and allowance records are maintained in Aircraft of the Republic; equipment designations resolve to Aviation Manufacturing and Systems.

Numbering System

The Air Force uses the Air Service Type system. The prefix identifies the primary role and the number identifies the sequence of accepted operational types in that role. A suffix identifies the major production or upgrade standard.

  • F: fighter and interceptor aircraft.
  • A: attack and close air support aircraft.
  • B: bomber and strategic strike aircraft.
  • T: trainer aircraft.
  • C: cargo, tanker and transport aircraft.
  • R: reconnaissance, surveillance and patrol aircraft.
  • E: electronic warfare, airborne command and battle management aircraft.
  • H: rotary-wing aircraft.
  • Q: uncrewed aircraft.

The first digit broadly marks the technological generation: 1 for piston aircraft, 2 for early jets, 3 for mature Cold War jets, 4 for digital-era aircraft, 5 for low-observable and networked aircraft, and 6 for current adaptive and optionally-crewed systems. The final digit marks the design sequence within the generation. The F-52C Kestrel, for example, is the second fifth-generation fighter type in Air Force service, in its third major standard. The system is intentionally separate from the Navy's carrier-oriented numbering system.

Aircraft Equipment Naming Convention

The Air Force records major aircraft equipment under the Air Equipment Mark system. The model begins with AF, followed by a component code and a two-digit generation number. The suffix identifies the block fitted to a particular aircraft standard. AFR denotes radar, AFO electro-optical or infrared sensors, AFE electronic-warfare equipment, AFC communications and datalinks, AFN navigation and flight-control equipment, and AFM mission computers. A Kestrel radar listed as AFR-52C is therefore an Air Force radar of the fifth generation, in the C block, not a separate aircraft designation.

The convention is useful because Republic aircraft often keep an airframe name for decades while their equipment changes. A historical type is therefore described by the equipment it actually carried in its main service period rather than by a later museum or reserve fit.

Doctrine

Air Force doctrine assumes that specialised crews produce better outcomes than single-seat generalists. The service argues that long-range weapons, cooperative sensors, electronic attack and joint targeting have made the second crew member more valuable rather than less. Fighter squadrons therefore train pilot and WSO pairs as enduring combat teams. Strike squadrons train with army formations, reconnaissance units train with intelligence agencies, and electronic warfare crews train with the Government Communications Agency and Combat Support Command.

The Air Force's present posture rests on four principles:

  1. Specialised airframes for specialised missions. Multirole capacity is accepted, but not allowed to erase the difference between air superiority, interdiction, close support, strategic strike and support aviation.
  2. Crewed decision-making in contested airspace. Automation supports the crew; it does not replace command judgement in complex engagements.
  3. Distributed basing. Aircraft, spares and crews must be able to disperse between hardened main bases, civil airports and prepared highway strips.
  4. Industrial continuity. Procurement favours families of aircraft and upgradeable mission systems so that factories, engine shops and avionics houses retain skills between major programmes.

Command Structure

Command Office

The Command Office sets strategy, allocates readiness targets and controls high-risk flight authorisations. It also manages long-term procurement with the Ministry of Finance, Department of Transport, National Standards Authority and the defence industrial councils.

Strike Command

Strike Command controls combat aviation.

  • Fighter Wings operate F-series aircraft for air defence, escort, offensive counter-air and theatre air superiority.
  • Attack Wings operate A-series aircraft for close air support, armed overwatch and battlefield interdiction.
  • Tactical Strike Wings operate specialist interdiction aircraft such as the A-43 Dart and B-46 Halberd.
  • Strategic Strike Wings operate B-series aircraft for long-range conventional strike, standoff missile carriage and strategic signalling. Nuclear weapons were never developed, so these patrols are understood as visible conventional deterrence rather than a nuclear mission.

Transport Command

Transport Command moves people, fuel, ammunition, vehicles and medical patients across the Republic's logistics network.

Training Command

Training Command controls the schools, simulator centres and conversion units that sustain the two-crew doctrine. WSOs are trained as combat aviators rather than back-seat technicians, with dedicated courses in radar management, electronic order of battle, cooperative engagement, standoff weapons, datalink discipline and mission command.

Ground Command

Ground Command provides administration, airfield security, engineering support, munitions handling, deployable communications and the Air Force Police Service.

Current Combat Aircraft

F-52C Kestrel

The Kestrel is the Air Force's principal air superiority aircraft. It is a twin-engine, low-observable fighter with a pilot and WSO seated in tandem. The WSO manages passive sensors, cooperative targeting, long-range missiles and electronic protection, allowing the pilot to concentrate on energy management and weapons employment. Kestrel squadrons normally fly with R-51 and E-50 support, but the aircraft can lead smaller defensive packages from dispersed bases.

F-51D Peregrine

The Peregrine is a high-climb interceptor used for homeland defence, northern air policing and rapid reaction alert. It is less stealthy than the Kestrel but faster to service and cheaper to keep on alert. Its WSO is primarily an intercept controller, responsible for long-range identification, rules-of-engagement confirmation and cooperative missile shots with ground radar sites.

A-43E Dart

The Dart remains the workhorse tactical strike and close air support aircraft. It is valued because its cockpit was designed around a pilot and WSO team from the start. The pilot flies low, manages survivability and works with forward air controllers; the WSO handles sensors, moving-target tracks, precision weapons and communications with army formations.

A-45B Mastiff

The Mastiff is a heavily protected close support aircraft retained for high-risk ground campaigns. It is slower than the Dart, but it can orbit near troops for long periods and absorb punishment. The type is not glamorous, but army commanders value it because its crews specialise in the patient work of finding, confirming and engaging small battlefield targets.

B-46D Halberd

The Halberd is a medium-range penetrating strike aircraft built for low-level ingress, standoff weapon release and hardened-target attack. Its two-person crew reflects the Air Force view that terrain, threat emitters, routing and weapons timing are too demanding to place on a single aviator in contested conditions.

B-54A Nightfall

The Nightfall is the current strategic strike aircraft. It is a low-observable, long-range platform designed to carry conventional standoff weapons and specialist penetrators. The aircraft is few in number, tightly controlled and usually paired with tankers, electronic warfare aircraft and uncrewed decoys.

Training System

The Air Force measures initial training from entry into service to first operational qualification. The complete pipeline lasts five years for commissioned officers and three years for enlisted personnel. These periods include initial military or commissioning training, occupational instruction, platform or mission-system training and operational conversion. Continuation training, refresher courses and conversion to a later aircraft or appointment take place after this initial qualification and do not extend the stated pipeline.

Pilots, co-pilots, WSOs, systems engineers, flight engineers, loadmasters, EWOs, intelligence officers and mission commanders are commissioned officers. This aviation list does not displace other commissioned professions elsewhere in the service. Aircrew and mission-crew occupations not designated as officer appointments are enlisted unless another service rule commissions them.

Aircrew training is long because the Air Force treats crews as the core weapon system. Officer aircrew complete the following flying and conversion sequence within their five-year pipeline:

  1. Elementary Flying: T-31 Finch, used for screening, basic navigation and airmanship.
  2. Basic Military Flying: T-37 Lark, used for formation, instrument flying, low-level navigation and disciplined radio work.
  3. Crew Pairing: Pilot and WSO candidates begin paired exercises in simulators and T-49 Mirror aircraft.
  4. Advanced Jet: T-41 Bluestar, used for high-speed handling, tactical formation and weapons employment.
  5. Operational Conversion: Crews transfer to front-line conversion units and qualify on the F-52, F-51, A-43, A-45, B-46 or B-54.

WSO candidates fly in the T-49 Mirror before operational conversion. The aircraft carries representative radar, electro-optical, datalink and electronic-support stations, allowing instructors to test workload, judgement and communication without consuming front-line fighter hours.

Enlisted personnel complete three years of initial training. Their pipeline combines basic military training, trade or mission-system instruction, supervised platform experience and operational qualification in a unit. Its balance varies between aircraft support, maintenance, communications, security, intelligence support and enlisted aircrew occupations, but the qualification point remains three years after entry.

Historical Development of Air Force Aircraft

Kingsbury military aviation began with balloon observation and survey work before adopting aeroplanes for artillery observation, coastal mapping and courier duty. The O-01 Gull and T-01 Wren established the connection between flying units and ground formations. Interwar fighter, bomber, training and transport schools then produced the F-12 Sparrowhawk, B-14 Anvil and T-11 Moth.

Mass wartime production created the F-21 Tempest, A-22 Badger, B-24 Crucible and C-23 Drayhorse. The 1948 transition and 1956 republican settlement changed ownership and command, not the identities of airframes already in service. Early jets created radar-observer duties that developed into the modern WSO profession.

The F-34 Valiant fixed the two-person interceptor cockpit, while the A-36 Pike and B-38 Hammer established specialist low-level strike. Digital F-40, A-43, C-42 and E-48 fleets made precise joint operations routine. The present F-51, F-52, B-54, R-51 and Q-55 generation is networked but retains human mission command in crewed combat aircraft.

Political costs and opposition

Air power protects national territory, shipping, disaster response and allied commitments, but its readiness costs are concentrated in public budgets and specialist labour. Civilian aerospace, transport and electronics firms lose engineers, machine capacity and secure components when procurement surges; households in base towns gain wages and services while communities under training routes bear noise, land restrictions and accident risk.

Dispersed bases and reserve fleets preserve resilience but duplicate hangars, fuel, maintenance and housing. Closing a marginal field would save money while removing the medical, postal and emergency link that made the field valuable. The compromise is multi-role aircraft, civil derivatives, regional basing and long-term contracts, which sustain capability and employment while making conversion to civilian work slower.
