Gazetteer of Official Names, Cities, Districts and Commercial Nicknames

This gazetteer records the standard public names used by ministries, state assemblies, transport authorities, businesses and newspapers. It is not a tourist slogan list. Official names are used for law, taxation, elections, emergency planning and public infrastructure; commercial nicknames are looser market labels attached to industries, streets, station districts, retail chains and local employers. The Settlement Geography of the Republic uses these names to describe the relationships among capitals, regional cities, towns, suburbs, camps and dispersed settlements. Syndicate names below are recorded for cross-border reporting, comparative social sources and transport references; they do not imply that Syndicate administrative boundaries follow Republic municipal law.

Naming Rules

  • The Republic is the ordinary short form for the federal state. Formal documents use the Republic unless a treaty, statute or diplomatic instrument requires a longer style.
  • The Capital Territory is a state-level federal territory. Its principal city is The Capital, historically Kingsbury in imperial usage.
  • State names are official political names. Their broad regional labels are descriptive shorthand and should not be treated as legal subtitles.
  • Continental names follow diplomatic map usage. The five continental landmasses are the Kingsbury Continent, Westphalia, the Varda, the Talarin and the Orissa. The Northern Rim and Archipelagic Region are cross-continental or maritime regions, not additional continents.
  • Capital names identify state administrative seats. Many are also ports, market towns, railway junctions or industrial cities rather than planned ceremonial capitals.
  • District names identify recognised urban quarters, suburbs, commuter towns, bridgeheads, estates or labour settlements. Their boundaries are practical and may differ between transport maps, police beats and council wards.
  • Commercial nicknames and brand names are recorded because they appear on signs, freight contracts, uniforms, shopfronts, canteens and local journalism. They are not official civic titles.
