AeroHull Composites

AeroHull Composites is a privately held medium enterprise producing radomes, avionics housings, fairings and other non-primary composite structures. It is important to several national aircraft programmes without being a prime contractor or a designer of complete airframes.

Business profile

The company was formed in 1976 from an aircraft-repair co-operative near Blue Skies and began production supply in 1978. Its Blue Skies works contain engineering, tooling and low-volume secure production; Eastgate carries out repeat manufacture, trimming, finishing and repair. Dated production responsibility is controlled by Aviation Manufacturing and Systems.

AeroHull's work includes reinforced equipment cases, antenna fairings, radar-transparent radomes, ducts and vibration-resistant interior structures. It does not normally control the final aerodynamic, electromagnetic or equipment design. The customer supplies controlled interface and performance requirements, while AeroHull owns the approved manufacturing process and tooling.

Production discipline

Composite parts depend on material storage, lay-up, cure cycle, cleanliness, machining and inspection. A visually acceptable radome can still distort a radar beam; a housing can pass a dimensional check and fail electromagnetic or fire requirements. Resin batches, freezer time, operator qualifications and curing records are therefore traceable to each delivered part.

The company uses automated cutting and inspection where volume justifies it, but complex low-rate parts still require skilled manual lay-up. Its main constraints are approved tooling, curing capacity and inspectors familiar with defects that cannot be judged from the surface alone.

Customers and commercial risk

SecureWing, OmniTech, Aether, SkyTech and independent maintenance houses are major customers. The mixture of civil, military and repair work protects AeroHull when one aircraft line slows. It also creates liability: a process fault can cross several programmes, and classified drawings must be separated from ordinary commercial work.

Prices are usually agreed through multi-year schedules with material escalation clauses. Customers may own programme-specific tools while AeroHull owns general equipment and process knowledge. If a prime contractor moves work elsewhere, arguments commonly concern the condition of customer tooling, qualification evidence and compensation for material bought against forecasts.

Workforce and local role

The workforce is concentrated in technicians, toolmakers, process engineers and inspectors rather than large assembly crews. Apprentices learn materials handling and documentation as carefully as hand skills. The company supports engineering clubs, night-shift transport and an annual open workshop day, but its local reputation ultimately depends on stable skilled employment and on paying smaller tool and maintenance suppliers promptly.
