Veyrport, Veyrholm

Veyrport is the Republic's smallest state capital and a northern service settlement for fisheries, polar research, air transport and treaty administration.

The city is young for the north because of rotation and research work; 18% of households change at least one member each year. Twelve wards elect forty-eight councillors: Northern Treaty and Services 19, Civic 14, Labour 8, Resource Justice 5 and independents 2. Federal voting was Northern List 31%, Civic 25%, Resource Justice 18%, Labour 15% and others 11%.

The workforce is 492,000 and unemployment 5.4%. The state and federal administrations employ 91,000, polar institutes 46,000, port and fisheries 54,000 and aviation or logistics 37,000. Median full-time pay is R$61,000 and household disposable income R$91,000, partly offset by high cost. Rent is R$1,480, home price R$330,000, heating R$5,900 and monthly transport R$610.

Revenue is R$12.6bn, expenditure R$15.9bn, debt R$9.4bn and backlog R$8.8bn; state equalisation supports the gap. There are 1,080 school sites across the wide municipal service area, a 2,800-bed regional hospital and 42 clinics. Buses run every fifteen minutes in the core and every two hours to outer settlements; air and coastal freight total 14.2 million tonnes. Diesel emissions, port spills and permafrost damage are principal concerns.

Mayor Soren Ivik, Northern Air Workers leader Nia Veyr and Treaty Services Council chair Pavel Snow are recurring actors. The Veyrholm Beacon serves the state. Disputes concern the air-service subsidy, research housing displacing residents and relocation of fuel tanks from unstable ground.
