Varkesh is a northern forest and extraction service city. Pine Depot holds timber rail and fuel stores; Boiler Hill is the main apartment estate; River Camp contains older worker housing; North Cut serves roads, clinics and forestry crews. Timber, extraction maintenance, fuel distribution, nursing, weather observation and road work provide most jobs. Secondary work includes trapping, household woodworking, repair and seasonal camp catering. Varkesh Forest College and the North Cut Apprenticeship School are routes to leaving or returning. The city clinic handles routine medicine and stabilisation; serious illness requires an air transfer. A depot bus and winter mail are as important as the timetable on paper.

Northstar Tea, Trailhouse clothing and local Pine Depot repair counters are trusted because they survive cold. The radio weather window, boiler board and school telephone tree are the main notice systems. The first fuel convoy and the spring river opening are celebrated with modest public meals. Varkesh is proud of endurance; outsiders call it backward. A tolerated practice is dismantling a closed camp machine for household parts before the depot authorises disposal. The former extraction dormitory is now a nursing school, and its name still carries the memory of men who never returned from internal exile. The live dispute is whether to approve a new road through forest hunting grounds. The Yelka household wants the teenager's technical placement but fears that success will mean permanent departure.
