Nadia and Eli Rook live near Ormston with three children. Eli is an army logistics officer who has completed repeated North Lantern rotations; Nadia is a nurse and the practical head of the household. The children attend a state school, a military-family club and an ordinary football programme. Housing is subsidised but tied to posting, and Nadia keeps duplicate records for childcare, allowances, leave and medical appointments.

The family depends on Defence Family Service, the school, the state ambulance system, Ormston's veterans' clinic and a neighbour network that includes other military families. Nadia supports Eli's service but resents the assumption that spouses can absorb every disruption. Eli believes the deployment protects the Republic and worries that public criticism will end his career. Their current pressure is a possible further rotation and a child's anxiety about casualty notices.
